The two main hospital campuses
The Brazos Valley has two major hospital systems, and each of them now runs campuses on both sides of the county line.
CHI St. Joseph Health has its original regional hospital in Bryan on East 29th Street, near the older heart of town, plus a south College Station campus off Rock Prairie Road near Highway 6. One detail that catches new residents off guard: St. Joseph moved its labor and delivery services from the Bryan campus to the College Station campus in 2021, so planned births in the system now happen on the College Station side.
Baylor Scott & White has its College Station medical center in the Midtown area off Rock Prairie Road at Highway 6, and a clinic network spread across both cities. The College Station hospital completed an 8,000-square-foot expansion that brought it to roughly 150 inpatient beds, doubled dialysis capacity, and added a 3T MRI in April, according to reporting from Community Impact. In December 2025 the system also announced a joint venture with Surgery Partners to co-own The Physicians Centre Hospital on University Drive in Bryan — a small specialty hospital a lot of locals already knew for orthopedics and surgical work.
What is under construction right now
Both systems are building. St. Joseph broke ground on a twelve-provider primary care facility at its south College Station campus, targeted for completion in fall 2026. Baylor Scott & White has broken ground on a new medical office building in College Station and has been widening specialty coverage at its Rock Prairie clinic — obstetrics, cardiology, and urology among them. KBTX reported in July 2026 that Brazos County hospitals are expanding specifically to keep up with population growth, and that the area increasingly draws patients from the surrounding rural counties rather than sending them to Houston or Temple.

Emergency care is more spread out than the hospital map suggests
Beyond the hospital emergency departments, Bryan-College Station has a scattering of freestanding emergency rooms and urgent care clinics, and the difference between the two is worth understanding before you need one. A freestanding ER bills at emergency rates even for minor complaints; an urgent care clinic does not. Signage can look nearly identical from the road, so it is worth knowing which is which near your house before a 10 p.m. decision.

How this plays into choosing a neighborhood
Drive times in Bryan-College Station are usually short, but they are not uniform, and Highway 6 is the spine that decides most of them. From Midtown, Edelweiss Gartens, or the Rock Prairie area, you are typically inside ten minutes of both College Station hospital campuses. From Pebble Creek or Castlegate, figure ten to fifteen. From Wellborn or the far south end of the county, plan on twenty or more, and note that Wellborn Road traffic around the A&M campus can add real time during class changes and on game-day weekends.
From Bryan neighborhoods near downtown or Villa Maria, the St. Joseph Bryan campus is close, but the College Station campuses are a Highway 6 run that is easy at 10 a.m. and considerably less easy at 5 p.m. If someone in the household has a standing appointment schedule — dialysis, oncology, regular prenatal visits — that repeated drive is worth timing during rush hour before you commit to a neighborhood, not after.
